Located on a corner lot within a commercial stretch of Willowdale Avenue, the unassuming multi-storey storey building with generous parking was full of potential – something the client recognized when looking for a home for their new dental clinic. However, while generously sized and ideally located, the existing structure was far from accessible and did little to engage the public realm. Our challenge was to address these issues while preserving the majority of the structure.

The solution took shape in the removal of the existing building front and its replacement with a new thickened façade containing a revamped vertical circulation scheme – including both stairs and a small elevator – as well as a number of waiting spaces with generous views of the street below. This thickened façade is complimented by a new landscape strategy which introduces accessible paths between the building’s main entrance, parking spots, and sidewalk, all while strengthening the relationship of the building to Willowdale Avenue.
